santa monica parish church

the santa monica parish church, commonly known sarrat church, largest church in ilocos norte , visited place tourists in sarrat. church has 1 of longest nave in country , declared important cultural property of philippines in september 2009.

the 105-meters long (the longest in country) church of st. monica, first built in 1779 augustinian friars, last spanish church built in ilocos. destroyed on march 3, 1816, rebuilt in 1848, burned again in 1882, repaired 1875 1895 , finished between 1895 , 1898. bell tower damaged during march 19, 1932 earthquake. has unique, massive, 3-level , attractive brick staircase connecting church convent. on 1 side of church eight-foot high image of st. monica. church interior, along houses surrounding plaza, renovated in 1983 irene marcos (the youngest daughter of late pres. marcos) wedding greggy araneta. few months later, on august 16, intensity 7.8 earthquake severely damaged church s main altar , upper facade.

the impressive convent, known casa del palacio real, first built in 1779, burned on february 3, 1816, , reconstructed in 1817 , 1886. was, @ times, used presidencia municipal during american era. within environs, jail criminals , political prisoners incarcerated , tortured, sala court, strangulation room , other secular sections. served, time, colegio de sta. monica (a branch of liceo de manila). convent damaged during march 19, 1932 earthquake , repaired, in turns. in 1977, both church , convent restored, government assistance. ground floor houses church memorabilia, church vestments , historical books , photographs. souvenir items (t-shirts) sold here.

the former 3-storey, square brick belfry of diminishing sizes, largest in province, has lost top storeys. once had clock on dome.
