from 1930s on (except during world war ii, when repressed music of enemy) jazz has had strong presence in japan. country important market music, , common recordings unavailable in united states or europe available there. number of japanese jazz musicians have achieved popularity abroad @ home. musicians such june (born in japan) , dan (third generation american born, of hiroshima fame), , sadao watanabe have large fan base outside native country.


lately, club jazz or nu-jazz has become popular growing number of young japanese. native djs such ryota nozaki (jazztronik), 2 brothers okino shuya , okino yoshihiro of kyoto jazz massive, toshio matsuura (former member of united future organization) , dj shundai matsuo creator of popular monthly dj event, creole in beppu, japan nu-jazz artists, sleepwalker, grooveline, , soil & pimp sessions have brought great change traditional notions of jazz in japan.


some of newer bands include ego-wrappin , sakerock along more experimental musicians such otomo yoshihide , keiji haino.
