history

the area used dairy farms. 1 of first residential subdivisions st kilda estate bounded cornwall street north, boggo road (now annerley road) west , ipswich road south. in 1866, junction hotel opened on triangular corner of ipswich road , boggo road (now annerley road).


post office

around 1880 postal receiving office opened @ boggo, became boggo post office on 1 may 1882. there proposal rename richmond post office rejected owing potential confusion richmond, north queensland , richmond, new south wales , new alternative names sought. @ point believed digby denham, member of stephens divisional board (and later premier of queensland), proposed call annerley after township variously spelled annerley, annerly or anerly in surrey, england. post office renamed annerley post office in november 1892.


st philip s anglican church

st philip s anglican church dedicated on 18 october 1886 archbishop of brisbane william webber. designed architect john henry burley , built j.w. stranson. church bell gift of abraham fleetwood luya , baptismal font gift of stonemason andrew lang petrie. on 7 december church reduced ruin severe storm caused extensive flooding , death of 2 children. extended , re-dedicated on 1 april 1906 st. clair donaldson, archbishop of brisbane, henry wallace atkinson architect. old church destroyed fire 28 november 1954 after work on new church had begun. current church consecrated archbishop of brisbane on 1 december 1955.


there @ least 2 parishioners lost lives @ gallipoli. @ st philips know of 2 of our parishioners part of landing @ gallipoli later died on 8th april 1918 in france. 2 mates , brother , brother in law. died on same day in same battle recorded historian charles bean. ....reginald verry , brother in law james victor atkinson.


a state funeral held @ church gordon brown senator queensland 1932 1965 (as member of australia labor party); ashes kept in church s columbarium.


schools

thompson estate provisional school opened on 30 april 1888 in four-roomed cottage in oxford street 52 pupils. in 1889 school occupied hall in regent street cater growing number of students. became state school on 31 jan 1891 under head teacher james joseph dempsey average attendance of 461 pupils. relocated present site in waldheim street on 31 march 1891. renamed junction park state school in 1893 737 pupils (the current site no longer being within thompson estate). growing student numbers resulted in creation of separate adjacent junction state infants school opened on 1 july 1948 grade 1 , 2 pupils. 1 january 1875, infants school reabsorbed main school, separate grounds , buildings continued used younger pupils within junction park state school. later declining enrolment numbers lead infants school buildings being surplus school s needs , land sold residential housing.


the ipswich road convent school opened on 30 april 1917 society of sacred heart (a teaching order of roman catholic nuns) using church building classroom. in 1919, sisters of sacred heart relocated stuartholme , sisters of st joseph of sacred heart (founded saint mary mackillop) took on school, renaming st joseph s convent school. when present church built in 1932 on corner of ipswich road , ferndale street (adjacent former church), separate class rooms included on lower level. in 1950s school renamed mary immaculate catholic primary school reflect name of church associated. since 1954, further buildings have been added site use school, including marymac community centre in 1970s. school operated sisters of st joseph until 1991, after school operated archdiocese of brisbane catholic education council (commonly known brisbane catholic education).


in 1964 sisters of st joseph opened secondary school girls called our lady s college. since 1976, school has been operated brisbane catholic education.


local government

annerley seat of shire of stephens. shire offices located on ipswich road between victoria terrace , junction terrace (27°30′25″s 153°02′05″e / 27.506925°s 153.034682°e / -27.506925; 153.034682 (stephens shire office)). after shire became part of city of brisbane in 1925, land sold , offices relocated on block become residence @ 15 ealing street.
