the collector a. p. holst told settlers on chichi-jima in 1889 birds had persisted on haha-jima until 1880s. however, given species not reported there neither during 1853 visit of first perry mission japan nor in 1854, seems either erroneous or misunderstanding other island in chichi-jima group. sedentary habits of bonin grosbeak make unlikely present anywhere outside chichijima rettÅ.
