in september 2009, several thousand fish killed in dunkard creek, monongalia county, west virginia. while state officials attributed fish kill golden algae bloom, investigation environmental protection agency claimed mining discharges consol energy s blacksville no. 2 mine created conditions golden algae bloom. after halting operations @ mine following fish kill, consol allowed continue mining operations after coming agreement west virginia department of environmental protection submit proposal discharge treatment plants april 15 of 2010. consol invested $200 million in water treatment facility , paid $5.5 million federal penalty u.s. department of justice , half west virginia department of environmental protection in 2011. company maintains never found liable fish kill.


as producer of coal , natural gas, environmental impact of coal mining , natural gas drilling has been subject of controversy consol energy. despite this, company has been recognized efforts @ environmental protection , awarded u.s. environmental protection agency climate protection award in 2002. additionally, consol maintains ongoing environmental efforts aimed @ restoring , enhancing property managed company , has worked conservation groups including ducks unlimited , national wild turkey federation on habitat restoration efforts.


political involvement

an ad national rifle association critical of president barack obama filmed on consol s blacksville no. 2 coal mine in west virginia became issue of political debate in 2009. national rifle association intended ask miners question how feel having second amendment rights taken away if obama becomes president. word spread among pro-obama miners contacted union, united mine workers of america, resulting in 440 miners taking day off avoid appearing in ad in contract-sanctioned protest, halting production @ consol s blacksville no. 2 coal mine.


lobbying efforts on part of consol have been issue of controversy. in first quarter of 2010, consol spent $1.02 million in lobbying expenses on issues relating coal mining , natural gas industries.
