organized labour supported illia expansionist economic policy. support turned antagonism during 1964, however, secret plans perón s return exile took shape. accordingly, cgt labor union head josé alonso called general strike in may, , became vocal opponent of president s – antagonism intensified after perón s failed attempt return in december, , during 1965, cgt leaders began publicly hinting @ support coup.
legislative elections took place on march 17, , despite unions hostility towards illia, peronists free of restrictions existing 1963. this, peronists presented own party lists, rallying behind popular union. popular union won popular vote (3,278,434 votes against illia s ucrp, obtained 2,734,970 votes), , elected 52 congressmen (the first time peronists had been allowed in decade).
the triumph of peronists shook argentine armed forces, both among internal military factions linked peronist movement, , in particular among large section of army remained anti-peronist. in addition, campaign against government being carried out important parts of media, notably primera plana , confirmado, nation s leading newsmagazines. seizing on minimally relevant events such president s refusal support operation power pack (lyndon johnson s april 1965 invasion of dominican republic), illia nicknamed turtle in both editorials , caricatures, , rule vaguely referred slow, dim-witted , lacking energy , decision, encouraging military take power , weakening government more; confirmado went further, publicly exhorting public support coup , publishing (non-scientific) opinion poll touting public support illegal measure.
under planning of commander of first division of army, general julio alsogaray, , support of military, economic groups, considerable part of media, , numerous politicians (notably ucri leader oscar alende, former president frondizi, , alsogaray s brother, right-wing economist alvaro alsogaray), military coup took place on june 28, 1966. general alsogaray presented himself in illia s office day, @ 5:00 a.m, , invited him resign post.

illia refused @ first, citing role commander-in-chief, @ 7:20, after seeing office invaded military officers , policemen grenade launchers, forced step down. next day, general juan carlos onganía became new argentine president.
illia lost wife, silvia martorell, cancer in november of year. relocated upscale buenos aires suburb of martínez, though still make frequent trips córdoba. continued participating in politics actively in support of ucr until death in córdoba on january 18, 1983.
