the member clubs of lega calcio grouped 2 divisions: serie , serie b. in given season club played each of others in same division twice, once @ home stadium , once @ of opponents.


clubs gained 3 points win (two before 1994) 1 draw, , none defeat. @ end of each season, club points in serie crowned champion. if points equal, head-to-head records determined winner (tie-breakers used in past). if still equal, goal difference , goals scored became deciding factors. serie b, @ top end 3 clubs won promotion serie a, bottom 3 serie clubs taking places. @ lower end, 4 club relegated lega pro prima divisione, while 4 teams lega pro joined serie b in place.


promotion , relegation determined final league positions, sustain interest more clubs on length of season in later years 1 promotion place serie b decided according playoff between 4 clubs, took place @ end of season. therefore possible team finishing sixth in championship promoted rather clubs finishing above them in standings. likewise, 1 relegation place prima divisione decided according playoff between 2 clubs.
