in elmhurst, destruction of of century-old buildings in heart of village destroyed construction of subway. land taken on west side of broadway avoid demolition of saint james episcopal church , reformed church. many nineteenth century residences , wandowenock fire company buildings had torn down. allow subway line curve queens boulevard broadway, northeast corner of 2 streets removed, in addition stores , old presbyterian chapel. new buildings built behind new curb line once subway completed, bringing new face elmhurst. introduction of subway stimulated local growth in elmhurst. commercial buildings , apartment houses replaced existing structures.
