as in post-communist central european countries, fixed line market in slovakia liberalised recently. slovak telecom inc. (former slovenské telekomunikácie, a.s.) privatised on 18 july 2000. 51% package of shares purchased german deutsche telecom ag 1 bln. eur (more 44 bln. skk @ time). outstanding 49% of shares still owned slovak government through department of transport, construction , regional development of slovak republic (34%) , national property fund (15%). part of privatisation contract, deutsche telecom agreed provide full digitalisation of fixed line network end of december 2004. slovak telecom rebranded t-com in year 2003. legal regulation liberalisation of slovak fixed line market passed in 2002 , became valid 1 january 2003, allowing competition in sector of fixed lines.


in 2010 there more 100 companies licensed provide public fixed line telephone service, although many of these not offer commercial service wider public. notable country-wide providers t-com, orange, dial telecom, swan , upc. several regional providers operate in market. many of these offer triple-play services consisting of fixed line service, broadband internet access , access television programmes. number of triple-play customers has doubled since service introduced , peaks @ 78,049 subscribers.


due strong penetration of slovak market mobile phones, fixed lines sector has decreased dramatically in recent years. while there 1,655,380 fixed lines in use in 1999, number decreased 60% 994,421 in 2010.

mobile cellular

mobile communication in slovakia first became available in 1990s when first nmt network operator, eurotel bratislava, a.s., subsidiary of state owned slovenské telekomunikácie a.s. eurotel, introduced first gsm service public in 1997. eurotel privatised mother company , rebranded t-mobile on 3 may 2005. integrated part of international t-mobile brand. second gsm network operator started operation on 15 january 1997 under name globtel a.s. acquired france télécom (through atlas services belgium, 100% shares) , rebranded orange slovensko on 27 march 2002. telefónica europe, third mobile operator in slovakia, entered market in february 2007 under o2 brand.


virtual providers active in slovak market, notable being tesco mobile (associated tesco stores) , funfón (a virtual operator associated popular fm radio station).
