kerala has 8 national highways run 1811.52 km. kerala has narrower national highways compared other parts of india. kerala state, other goa, has requested narrower highways in state. nhai upgrades highways minimum 4-lane, 60-meter-wide, grade-separated highway or better standard across india. in kerala, national highways being upgraded 45-meter-wide highways. previous kerala state government had requested nhai reduce width of national highways in state 30-meters, although neighbouring karnataka , tamil nadu upgrading national highways 60-meters or more wider highways, futuristic provision 6/8-lane highway. reason cited state government difficulty , disinterest in land acquisition, responsibility of state government. nhai had stopped working on many of highway widening/upgrade projects there protest against in state. new government under chief minister pinarayi vijayan took immediate steps develop nh 66 (kasargod thiruvananthapuram) 6 lane , process going fast.


the palakkad—thrissur—kochi stretch of nh 544 part of north-south , east-west corridor of indian highway system. due previous land acquisition crisis, nhai had stopped feasibility study of project under nhdp–phase-iii scheme in stretch of nh 66 earlier, has begun again after strict demand of present chief minister. there proposal construction of standalone ring road/bypasses around tiruvananthapuram city under nhdp phase vii.
