lithuanians began settle in baltimore in 1876. wave increased during 1880s , continued in large numbers until 1920s. 1950, lithuanian community numbered around 9,000. these lithuanians settled in neighborhood north of hollins street became known baltimore s little lithuania.


three roman catholic churches have been designated lithuanian parishes: st. alphonsus beginning in 1917, st. john baptist church 1888 1917, , st. wenceslaus beginning in 1872. st. alphonsus remaining lithuanian parish in baltimore, st. wenceslaus re-designated bohemian parish , st. john baptist church closed in 1989.


while lithuanians settled in baltimore roman catholic, large minority lithuanian jews. between 1880s , 1920s, lithuanian jews (also known litvaks) major component of jewish immigration baltimore. yeshivas ner yisroel, prominent yeshiva in baltimore, founded lithuanian (litvish)-style talmudic college jews lithuania , belarus. litvaks helped found b nai israel synagogue.
