early life , education

eugene mcguinness born in hellertown, pennsylvania, daniel , mary (née flood) mcguinness. received education @ parochial school of holy infancy church in bethlehem. attended st. charles borromeo seminary in overbrook, , earned doctor of both laws , doctor of sacred theology degrees university of santo tomas in manila. ordained priesthood archbishop edmond francis prendergast on may 22, 1915.

he served curate @ st. paul s church, st. agatha s church, st. john s church, , cathedral of ss. peter , paul, in philadelphia. assistant director of society propagation of faith (1917–19), , field secretary (1919–20) , vice-president (1920–24) of catholic church extension society. executive secretary of american board of catholic missions (1923–37), , named domestic prelate in 1929.

on october 13, 1937, mcguinness appointed bishop of raleigh, north carolina, pope pius xi. received episcopal consecration on following december 21 cardinal dennis joseph dougherty, bishops william david o brien , hugh l. lamb serving co-consecrators.


coadjutor bishop of oklahoma city

bishop mcguinness appointed coadjutor bishop of oklahoma city-tulsa , titular bishop of ilium on november 11, 1944.


upon death of bishop francis kelley on february 1, 1948, mcguinness succeeded him third bishop of oklahoma city-tulsa. during 9-year-long administration, saw catholic population in state grow 40 percent, , received 1,242 adult converts in 1957 alone. priestly , religious vocations flourished, , made trips ireland , poland recruit clergy.


mcguinness died @ age 68.
