this flat stage departed ypres in belgium. eddy merckx , king philippe both present see riders depart. racing officially started between ypres , zonnebeke. race headed north-east towards roeselare, before turning due south menen , on wevelgem. stage continued south, re-entering france before arriving in roubaix. here, onwards, stage featured 9 sections of difficult cobble-set pavement, using of same roads paris–roubaix cycle race. intermediate sprint took place further 32.5 km (20 mi) along route south roubaix @ templeuve-en-pévèle. race took circuitous route west pont-à-marcq, south bersée, , east orchies. culmination of stage had riders pass through several small villages in quick succession; beuvry-la-forêt, tilloy-lez-marchiennes, warlaing, wandignies-hamage, hornaing , hélesmes. finally, stage finished east of wallers @ southern end of arenberg trench, adjacent arenberg mine.
inclement weather prompted tour organizers remove 2 cobble segments stage route safety reasons, leaving 7 cobble segments riders navigate.
wet roads contributed multitude of crashes before riders encountered cobbles. reigning champion chris froome involved in 2 crashes @ 35 km (22 mi) point , 83 km (52 mi) point. these crashes, combined crash previous day , lingering effects of serious crash in critérium du dauphiné several weeks prior, forced abandonment race.
upon encountering cobbles, peloton splintered, yellow jersey-wearer vincenzo nibali s team astana leading pack. nibali s group opened lead of 2 minutes prior encountering seventh , last cobble segment, upon astana s lieuwe westra accelerated, leaving behind nibali, teammate jakob fuglsang, , belkin pro cycling s lars boom. boom attacked astana riders on last cobble segment , held lead through final kilometers take first victory of 2014 season, first career stage win in tour de france. came 9 years day after previous dutch stage victory in tour. nibali finished 19 seconds behind boom, in doing putting 2 minutes gc contenders andrew talansky, tejay van garderen, , alejandro valverde, , two-and-a-half minutes tour favorite alberto contador.
