the tradition of presenting trophy after game did not start until 1882 final; after first final in 1872 trophy not presented winners, wanderers, until reception held 4 weeks later in pall mall restaurant in london. under original rules, trophy permanently presented club won competition 3 times, although when inaugural winners wanderers achieved feat 1876 final, rules changed fa secretary cw alcock (who captain of wanderers in first victory).

the first trophy, little tin idol , made martin, hall & co @ cost of £20 stolen birmingham shoe shop window belonging william shillcock while held aston villa on 11 september 1895 , never seen again. despite £10 reward information, crime never solved. happened while in care, fa fined villa £25 pay replacement.
just on 60 years later, 80 year old career criminal henry (harry) james burge claimed have committed theft, confessing newspaper, story being published in sunday pictorial newspaper on 23 february 1958. claimed have carried out robbery 2 other men, although when discrepancies contemporaneous report in birmingham post newspaper (the crime pre-dated written police reports) in account of means of entry , other items stolen, detectives decided there no realistic possibility of conviction , case closed. burge claimed cup had been melted down make counterfeit half-crown coins, matched known intelligence of time, in stolen silver being used forge coins laundered through betting shops @ local racecourse, although burge had no past history of forgery in record of 42 previous convictions had spent 42 years in prison. had been further imprisoned in 1957 7 years theft cars. released in 1961, died in 1964.
