the common problem sensitive data deleted files not erased , may recovered interested parties. file systems remove link data (see undelete, above). overwriting parts of disk else or formatting may not guarantee sensitive data unrecoverable. special software available overwrites data, , modern (post-2001) ata drives include secure erase command in firmware. however, high security applications , high-security enterprises can require disk drive physically destroyed ensure data not recoverable, microscopic changes in head alignment , other effects can mean such measures not guaranteed. when data encrypted encryption key has unavailable. crypto-shredding practice of deleting data (only) deleting or overwriting encryption keys.
