following successful defence of bosanski brod in march, hvo, reinforced hv troops, pushed jna , vrs south town , captured towns of modriča , derventa end of may. capture of derventa severed last road available bosnian serbs spanning vrs-controlled western bosnia around banja luka , vrs-held territory in east of country, adjacent serbia. prevented supply of banja luka bulk of territory gained republic of serbian krajina (rsk) , croatian serbs in croatia since initial phase of croatian war of independence.


the loss of road link caused substantial supply problems in banja luka , surrounding area, , resulted in vrs counterattack against hvo , hv forces in area. @ same time, vrs , jna captured doboj , bosanski Šamac east , south of hvo/hv advance. in june, vrs 1st krajina corps initiated preliminary operations against hvo/hv-held area around derventa, attempting improve vrs positions needed launch major attack there. 20 july, vrs captured villages of kotorsko , johovac north of doboj , achieved main objective of preliminary advance.


the deaths of twelve newborn babies in banja luka hospital due shortage of incubator bottled oxygen cited immediate cause action, veracity of incident has since been questioned. borisav jović, contemporary high-ranking serbian official , member of yugoslav presidency, has claimed report wartime propaganda, stating banja luka had 2 bottled oxygen production plants in immediate vicinity , virtually self-reliant in respect.
