the ancient ettumanoor mahadeva temple here has brought glory , fame place. myths have pandavas , sage vyasa had worshipped @ temple. name of place had origin word manoor , means home of deer.


the present temple building, gopuram , fortress around it, reconstructed in 717 me (1542 ad). there dravidian mural paintings on walls inside , outside of main entrance. fresco of pradosha nritham (dance of shiva) 1 of finest wall painting in india. there golden flag staff inside temple. on top of idol of bull surrounded small bells , metal leaves of banyan tree. temple roofs covered copper sheets , has 14 ornamental tops. bhagavati, sastha, ganapathy , yakshi installed here subordinate deities. believed great philosopher, sankaracharya wrote soundaraya lahari staying in temple.

the famous ettumanoor mahadevar temple hosts arattu festival celebrated on grand scale on thiruvathira day in february–march every year. lot of people come temple on 8th , 10th day of festival when 7 , half elephants (in malayalam: ezharaponnaana) made of gold (nearly 13 kg) held in public view.this statue donated temple travancore maharaja. temple, wealthiest devaswom in kerala, has many valuable possessions.


the thulabharam 1 of important rituals of temple. people make offerings god favours received. on balance, child or man whom offerings promised god, weighed against offerings ranging gold fruits. ettumanoor important pilgrim centre of hindus.
