the century of progress exposition committee sought exciting signature attraction, 1 remembered eiffel tower 1889 paris world s fair or ferris wheel of 1893 chicago world s fair. 1 proposal under consideration, underwritten montgomery ward, called tower of water , light—a 250-foot-tall tower water flowing down outside , elevators traveling observation platforms. when montgomery ward company backed out of offer finance tower, commission considered sky ride.


the sky ride, idea suggested engineer named william l. hamilton, span grounds , relatively cheap build. ride built in span of 6 months prior fair s opening, consortium of 5 companies: great lakes dredge , dock company, inland steel, john roebling , sons, mississippi valley structural steel , otis elevator @ cost of 1,000,000 usd.


the ride had capacity of 5,000 people per hour. reported attraction had 2,616,389 riders in 1933 , total of 4.5 million during course of fair. @ time of construction span between towers 1 of longest in world, allegedly exceeded in span george washington bridge, , towers higher of skyscrapers in chicago. reported contained 2,000 tons of steel, 100 miles (160 km) of cabling , cableway had breaking strength of 220,000 pounds per square inch.


the sky ride demolished @ conclusion of fair. west tower brought down using 120 pounds of dynamite. east tower toppled on august 29, 1935 using 1,500 pounds of thermite charges melt ten-foot sections near bottom of 2 of legs. when thermite fired, 2 legs collapsed , tower fell on side.
