the han people originated in mainland china. each han subgroup associated particular region in china; cantonese originated in western guangdong, putian in puxian, foochow in fuzhou, hoklo in southern fujian, chaoshan/teochew in eastern guangdong, hakka in eastern/central guangdong , shanghainese in shanghai.

the cia world factbook puts number of pen-sheng-jen @ 84% , number of mainlanders @ 14%. 70% of taiwan s population hoklo, while 10-15% hakka.


hong kong

in hong kong, majority of population cantonese. according cia world factbook, 89% of hong kongers speak cantonese language.


other han chinese peoples present in hong kong include hakka, hoklo, teochew , shanghainese.


macau

macau, hong kong has han (cantonese) majority. according cia world factbook, 85.7% of macanese speak cantonese.


the term macanese people can either refer macau, or macanese of mixed cantonese , portuguese descent.
