newcomb hotel
the newcomb hotel, located adjacent both gardner museum , washington park, former 130-room, five-story hotel built in 1888. designed st. louis architect issac s. taylor , funded quincy-chicago businessman richard newcomb, owned gem city paper mill. hotel opened on same day inauguration of president benjamin harrison, , ball held in honor. time, considered finest hotel in state outside of chicago. major fire struck structure in 1904 , killed 2 workers. in years since, hotel has fallen disrepair , has continued deteriorate due neglect. in 2013, structure listed 1 of illinois most-endangered historic places.
on september 6, 2013, vacant newcomb hotel caught fire, causing significant damage structure. considered total loss , demolished following sunday.

on april 12, 1945, tornado ripped through business district of quincy, illinois, , severely damaged courthouse. wind severe blew roof off of structure, damaging beyond repair. because incident occurred few hours after news reached quincy of president roosevelt s death, several residents joked fdr , god fighting on power there.
