in late 1917, commanded fevzi pasha, seventh army ordered advanced across desert in order bring pressure bear upon allenby s inland flank in palestine. while allenby attacked ottoman eighth army, australian mounted division sent hold advance of seventh army. seventh army did manage force australians retreat several miles australians held line. after british victory in battle of mughar ridge on 13 november (which did not directly involve seventh army), fevsi decided withdraw seventh army guard jerusalem.
