off iwo jima, february 1945


samaritan evacuated patients guam guadalcanal, , peleliu russell islands in august , september 1944. after brief overhaul @ espiritu santo, served base hospital @ ulithi until 16 february 1945, when sailed iwo jima. arrived off bitterly engaged island 20 february, , sailed 2 days later 606 patients on board saipan. on second day out, 8 men buried @ sea. hospital ship returned iwo jima 25 february 1945 embark patients transportation guam on first of 2 such voyages. arrived @ ulithi 2 april, , week later got underway embattled okinawa. arriving 13 april, received casualties @ beach during daytime , withdrew @ night transport areas offshore, alternating stays @ okinawa evacuation voyages saipan until 1 july, when sailed saipan pearl harbor. here took patients several island hospitals on board, sailed san francisco, , on 10 september pearl harbor thence sasebo, provided hospital facilities occupation forces until 15 march 1946.
