in winter of 1776–1777, cherokee followers of dragging canoe, had supported british @ outbreak of american revolutionary war, moved down tennessee river , away historic overhill cherokee towns. established dozen new towns in frontier area in attempt gain distance encroaching european-american settlers.
dragging canoe , followers settled @ place great indian warpath crossed chickamauga creek, near present-day chattanooga, tennessee. named town chickamauga after stream. entire adjacent region referred in general chickamauga area. american settlers adopted term refer militant cherokee in area chickamaugas. in 1782, militia forces under john sevier , william campbell destroyed eleven cherokee towns. dragging canoe once again led people further down tennessee river, establishing 5 new, lower cherokee towns.
after revolutionary war, westward migration increased pioneers new states of virginia, north carolina, south carolina, , georgia.
