new orleans public library (nopl) operates algiers regional library. first established in 1966. hurricane katrina damaged original building in 2005. prior construction of new library, algiers residents used temporary cita dennis hubbell branch, located in museum, , trailer adjacent damaged algiers regional branch. damaged building demolished in 2010, , new 28,000-square-foot (2,600 m), $9.25 million algiers regional library constructed in place. architectural firm gould evans associates of kansas city, missouri, , construction company gibbs construction. gould evans worked new orleans firm lee ledbetter & associates design library , 4 others.
the federal emergency management agency (fema) pay costs of demolition of previous library , construction of new library since previous facility had been, according fema s estimation, on 50% damaged katrina. features , amenities present in new facility not in previous facility financed other sources, including new orleans municipal bond sales , funds louisiana recovery authority. design-build process, 1 specially allowed in parishes affected hurricane katrina under louisiana law, used rebuild library , 4 others.
