after independence elected provisional parliament bihar in 1950. part of young turk brigade of indian national congress party during time of first prime minister of india jawaharlal nehru.

satyendra narayan sinha prominent educationist, , served education minister of unified bihar in government headed chief minister pandit binodanand jha 1961–1963, , again 2 consecutive terms in cabinet of k. b. sahay 1963–1967. held range of portfolios including local self government , agriculture. credited streamlining entire education system of bihar state. state education minister, played instrumental role in establishment of magadh university in bodh gaya, in year 1962. occupied second position (second-in-command) in cabinet , played role of de facto chief minister during period 1961–1967 under governments headed k. b. sahay , pandit binodanand jha. had unique political acumen determine electoral prospects of candidates in assembly election sitting @ home in patna.

the reigning prime minister of india, indira gandhi, declared state of emergency on 25 june 1975 due internal political disturbances. accordingly, fundamental rights enjoyed in indian constitution suspended. political dissidents, newspaper reporters, opposition leaders opposed emergency jailed. chhote saheb, along other prominent leaders, opposed blatant misuse of state machinery. in 1977, during emergency in india, made president of bihar janata party , chairman of state election committee.

the congress party, led indira gandhi suffered defeat @ hands of janata party coalition of several small parties created in 1977 , alliance came power, headed morarji desai, became first non-congress prime minister of india. in bihar, janata party won fifty-four lok sabha seats in 1977 general elections under mentorship of jayaprakash narayan , rose power in bihar assembly too. struck janata party , preferred in opposition although have been considered prize catch congress party.

he quit party following differences party presidentchandra shekhar singh , returned congress fold in 1984. prime minister of india indira gandhi came down patna formally admit him congress party.

chief ministership

as chief minister of bihar, chhote saheb held portfolio of education fourth term in later years 1989–1990.in same year, conceived, proposal set ntpc s super thermal power project @ nabinagar in bihar s aurangabad district prime minister of india , congress leader rajiv gandhi; project went limbo following state governments failed follow it. in 2007, manmohan singh s government put stamp of approval on it.
