early life

waterhouse born in city of rome english painters william , isabella waterhouse in 1849, in same year members of pre-raphaelite brotherhood, including dante gabriel rossetti, john everett millais , william holman hunt, first causing stir in london art scene. exact date of birth unknown, though baptised on 6 april, , later scholar of waterhouse s work, peter trippi, believed born between 1 , 23 january. life in italy has been cited 1 of reasons why many of later paintings set in ancient rome or based upon scenes taken roman mythology.

in 1854, waterhouses returned england , moved newly built house in south kensington, london, near newly founded victoria , albert museum. waterhouse, or nino nicknamed, coming artistic family, encouraged involved in drawing, , sketched artworks found in british museum , national gallery. in 1871 entered royal academy of art school, study sculpture, before moving on painting.

early career

later career

in 1883 married esther kenworthy, daughter of art schoolmaster ealing had exhibited own flower-paintings @ royal academy , elsewhere. in 1895 waterhouse elected status of full academician. taught @ st. john s wood art school, joined st john s wood arts club, , served on royal academy council.
