marimekko founded in 1951 viljo , armi ratia, after viljo s oil-cloth factory project failed , converted garment plant. armi asked artist friends apply graphic designs textiles. show how fabric used, company designed , sold line of simple dresses using fabric. when finland s leading industrial designer timo sarpaneva invited company present fashion show (albeit canceled @ short notice) @ 1957 triennale in milan, recognition of fashion industrial art , of marimekko s key role in process. garments showcased in nearby rinascente upscale department store display manager giorgio armani.
