the area has large number of churches , chapels including saints (church in wales), beulah (urc), bethesda (independent), rhiwbina baptist church, bethany (baptist), bethel (methodist) , church of jesus christ of latter-day saints (lds church).
near summit of wenallt, north of rhiwbina, remains of oval encampment dating iron age, earliest evidence of settlement in area. @ base of hill norman motte called twmpath.
the last native welsh prince of morgannwg (glamorgan), iestyn ap gwrgant, may have been killed in battle north of rhiwbina towards end of 11th century, near present-day butchers arms public house. stream nearby still called rhyd waedlyd, means bloody ford . rhydwaedlyd title given housing developments rhiwbina s east in latter half of 20th century. area has since come considered part of rhiwbina , name rhydwaedlyd has fallen out of use entirely.
rhiwbina railway station
until 20th century area remained rural, few houses. railway station opened in 1911, , following year development began of new garden suburb, based on masterplan sir raymond unwin, 1 of leading architects of garden city movement. first 34 houses built in 1913 , more built 1919 1923, occupying area between pen-y-dre , lon isa became known rhiwbina garden village. designated conservation area in 1976.

a focal point in rhiwbina in twentieth century rhiwbina tea gardens . owned smart family, developed landmark local business, becoming rhiwbina motor garages in response rise of motor car, , area s first video rental outlet in 1980s. business closed on retirement of cliff smart in 1989 , site occupied development of clos yr ardd. translates garden close, in memory of tea gardens, there little greenery left.

rhiwbina has been home of many noted welsh artists including authors jack jones , kate roberts, musician howard jones, dramatist tom richards , actress rachel thomas, worked together.
since 1997 deri community quarterly newsletter has been published rhiwbina civic society. rhiwbina has quarterly magazine launched on 15 november 2007, called rhiwbina living. similar publication, wenallt , published between 1972 , 1980 failed due lack of local advertising. hyperlocal news , information website rhiwbina info has operated since 2013.
