there thirteen resorts in portes du soleil area, of 7 french , 5 swiss. of resorts have grown around traditional valley villages - avoriaz , small les crosets , torgon purposely built during mid-sixties. morzine , chatel largest of traditional towns in area. whole skiing relatively low in altitude compared french destinations. highest skiing below 2,500 m (8,200 ft) , lowest approximately 900 m (3,000 ft). however, area heavily influenced microclimate between lake geneva , mont blanc, generates substantial snowfall between november , april making possible keep area open skiing typically december until mid late april. of lower stations close around april 1 or earlier depending on snow conditions though.

morzine largest town in portes du soleil area. traditional market town , town idea of large connected ski area stems. morzine has been 1 of leading ski destinations in europe 80 years , traditions of town still obvious. there large choice of hotels , apartments in morzine , on surrounding mountainsides. there quite long walk 1 of lift stations if live on outskirts of resort. there free bus service prodains cablecar, ardent cabincar , nyon cablecar. cablecars supermorzine (avoriaz) , pleney short walk town centre. morzine @ altitude of 950 meters , bordered woods allowing skiing in poor weather conditions. peaks of nyon , chamossiere both above forest limit though. immediate terrain , plenye plateau offers predominantly easy medium skiing, has led resort being popular families , school parties. more challenging slopes can found @ avoriaz via prodains lifts 5 minutes away on local bus service. morzine northern of french alpine resorts , benefits regional microclimate between mont blanc , lac leman.

chatel

châtel typical savoyard village on border switzerland. village stretches lac de vonnes (near border) down centre. there 2 main ski areas in village, super châtel reached cabincar or chaiflift centre of town , here links lift made swiss towns of torgon , morgins. base station of larger , more challenging linga/pre la joux area reached shuttle bus. area forms link between chatel , avoriaz , while dominated red , black slopes , tremendous offpiste possible ski way avoriaz on easy blue slopes once needed negotiate difficult red slopes return new blue run has been in place since 2011/12 season gives alternative return less confident on red runs. above pre la joux lies small mountain village of plaine dranse in houses turned restaurants – 15 in chez babette , le marmottes being high-end among them, both in height , price. there small church built rock @ plaine dranse. resort of chatel lies @ 1200 m , highest point of skiing 2200 m, many of lower slopes north facing , retain snow throughout season, ending in late april.

morgins

also part of portes du soleil, located in switzerland, morgins has kept of traditional charm , not crowded larger resorts in france. resort not large skyscraping hotel type of place. rather mix of small traditional chalets owned local swiss families , several chalet operators. village has ski torchlight descent each wednesday during winter open all. skiing linked chatel on 1 side of village , champoussin other side. in case of sparse snow problems first occur: quite necessary go down chairlift if arrive chatel. connection typically first close down altogether since upper lifts draglifts making impossible bring people down if snowcover lacking. skiing in morgins comparatively easy.

les crosets

les crosets small resort in portes du soleil located in switzerland. reached skis morgins , avoriaz. allows views of dents du midi , has large funpark. famous swiss wall (an orange mogul run) can reached les crosets. there 2 top stations connecting avoriaz – pointe de mossette , chavanette. les crosets built above village of champery. 2 stations connected champéry-plancachaux cable car. there no pistes connecting les crosets champery. 1 has either go down cablecar or ski down grand paradis , continue car or shuttle bus.

champery

champery swiss village situated @ altitude of approximately 1050 meters, nestled @ base of dents du midi , dents blanches, @ end of vallée d’illiez. 150 years old village substantial role in developing skiing tourism in switzerland. among initiating towns when portes du soleil skiarea established in late sixties. there no pistes leading way down champery due in part fact mountainside above town heavily exposed snow. champéry – planachaux cable-car (125 passengers) , new 6-seater chairlift in grand-paradis easy , fast connections vast system though.
