bucharest situated on banks of dâmbovița river, flows argeș river, tributary of danube. several lakes – important of lake herăstrău, lake floreasca, lake tei, , lake colentina – stretch across northern parts of city, along colentina river, tributary of dâmbovița. in addition, in centre of capital small artificial lake – lake cișmigiu – surrounded cișmigiu gardens. these gardens have rich history, having been frequented poets , writers. opened in 1847 , based on plans of german architect carl f.w. meyer, gardens main recreational facility in city centre.


besides cișmigiu, bucharest parks , gardens include herăstrău park , botanical garden. herăstrău park located in northern part of city, around lake herăstrău, , includes site village museum. botanical garden, located in cotroceni neighborhood bit west of city centre, largest of kind in romania , contains on 10,000 species of plants (many of them exotic); originated pleasure park of royal family.

lake văcărești located in southern part of city. on 190 hectares, including 90 hectares of water, host 97 species of birds, half of them protected law, , @ least 7 species of mammals. lake surrounded buildings of flats , odd result of human intervention , nature taking course. area small village ceaușescu attempted convert lake. after demolishing houses , building concrete basin, plan abandoned following 1989 revolution. 2 decades, area shifted being abandoned green space children play , sunbathe, being contested previous owners of land there, being closed redevelopment sports centre. redevelopment deal failed, , on following years, green space grew unique habitat. in may 2016, lake declared national park, văcărești nature park.



since 2015, lake văcărești, dubbed delta of bucharest , protected area.
