bucharest has unique status in romanian administration, since municipal area not part of county. population, however, larger of other romanian county, hence power of bucharest general municipality (primăria generală), capital s local government body, same other romanian county council.
the city government headed general mayor (primar general). decisions approved , discussed capital s general council (consiliu general) made of 55 elected councilors. furthermore, city divided 6 administrative sectors (sectoare), each of has own 27-seat sectoral council, town hall, , mayor. powers of local government on area are, therefore, shared both bucharest municipality , local sectoral councils little or no overlapping of authority. general rule main capital municipality responsible citywide utilities such water , sewage system, overall transport system, , main boulevards, while sectoral town halls manage contact between individuals , local government, secondary streets , parks maintenance, schools administration, , cleaning services.

sector 5 (population 288,690): rahova, ferentari, giurgiului, cotroceni, 13 septembrie, dealul spirii
sector 6 (population 371,060): giulești, crângași, drumul taberei, militari, grozăvești (also known regie), ghencea
each sector governed local mayor, follows: sector 1 – daniel tudorache (psd, since 2016), sector 2 – mihai mugur toader (psd, since 2016), sector 3 – robert negoiță (psd, since 2012), sector 4 – daniel băluță (psd, since 2016), sector 5 – daniel florea (psd, since 2016), sector 6 – gabriel mutu (psd, since 2016).
like other local councils in romania, bucharest sectoral councils, capital s general council, , mayors elected every 4 years population. additionally, bucharest has prefect, appointed romania s national government. prefect not allowed member of political party , role represent national government @ municipal level. prefect acting liaison official facilitating implementation of national development plans , governing programs @ local level. prefect of bucharest (as of 2014) paul nicolae petrovan.
the municipality of bucharest, along surrounding ilfov county, part of bucurești – ilfov development region project, equivalent nuts-ii regions in european union , used both eu , romanian government statistical analysis, , co-ordinate regional development projects , manage funds eu. bucharest-ilfov development region not, however, administrative entity yet.
