history

ottoman era

potsherds ottoman period have been found.


in 1863, french explorer victor guérin saw distance, , described small hamlet, while official ottoman village list of 1870 showed 32 houses , population of 147, though population count included men only. in 1882 palestine exploration fund s survey of western palestine described bil in (then called belain) little village on hill-side .


british mandate era

in 1922 census of palestine conducted british mandate authorities, bil in had population of 133, muslim, increasing in 1931 census 166, still muslims, in total of 39 houses.


in 1945 village had 210 muslim inhabitants, while total land area 3,992 dunams, according official land , population survey. of this, 1,450 dunums of village land plantations , irrigable land, 800 used cereals, while 6 dunams classified built-up public areas.


jordanian era

in wake of 1948 arab–israeli war, , after 1949 armistice agreements, bil in came under jordanian rule.


post-1967

after six-day war in 1967, bil in occupied israeli forces. since signing of interim agreement on west bank , gaza strip in 1995, has been administered palestinian national authority. adjacent israeli west bank barrier , israeli settlement of modi in illit. historically small agricultural village, modern bil in 9 kilometres (five point 6 miles) western outskirts of ramallah. according neil rogachevsky, bil in considered ideological stronghold of fatah, , many employees of palestinian authority reside there.
