this smallest of 3 subspecies, both in maximum length , in average length. 2 maximum lengths ever reported both 62 inches (157.5 cm): first wright , wright (1957) , second david l. edwards specimen killed north of yazoo city in mississippi 30 years later. regarding average length, study clarke (1949) of 100 specimens showed 86 less 42 inches (106.7 cm) long , 64 less 36 inches (91.4 cm). in study barbour (1956) of 167 specimens western kentucky, largest 39 inches (99.3 cm) , average size 27.5 inches (70 cm). coloration similar 2 eastern subspecies, except specimens tend become darker @ younger age. also, light line borders dark cheek strip—clearly defined in a. p. conanti , less in a. p. piscivorus—is not present in subspecies. dorsal color pattern consists of 10 15 dark crossbands can seen in small specimens, in larger ones.
