this short 155 km stage began @ parker s piece in university city of cambridge , started heading in southern direction towards saffron walden. saffron walden route travelled east, , south, western outskirts of braintree, essex, before following road west felsted. route turned south chelmsford, , west intermediate sprint @ epping forest. here, race continued south british capital, hosted grand départ during 2007 tour de france. prestigious stage took peloton through queen elizabeth olympic park, , travelled past of london s famous landmarks, before finishing near buckingham palace, finish line on mall.


jean-marc bideau , jan bárta spent 147 km (91 mi) out in front of peloton, greater part of stage. both riders each taking part in first tour de france, bideau first succumb gradual acceleration of peloton, 8 km (5 mi) remaining, on outskirts of central london. meanwhile, bárta managed stay in front further 2 km (1 mi). peloton bunch sprint on mall. marcel kittel succeeded in securing sixth stage win @ tour de france, , second stage win of 2014 tour.
