173 high street victorian façade hiding considered oldest extant jettied timber-framed building in great britain, dated dendrochronology of structural timbers between 1277 , 1297. building thought been jeweller or goldsmith s shop workshop behind, believed have been jettied service wing larger aisled hall house, has since disappeared. represents example of transition in carpentry technology, use of passing braces crown posts. 13th century origin of structure discovered chance in 2000 builders had begun work on appeared victorian property. shop was, 1869, figg s chemists; post-restoration (with expertise , £250,000 grant english heritage), shop used estate agency. dr simon thurley, chief executive of english heritage, said amazing discovery. gives extraordinary insight how berkhamsted high street have looked in medieval times.
125 high street, house , shop opposite st peter s church, timber-framed building wing 1 bay of 14th-century open hall. layout suggests once had second bay of similar size – length of 26 feet (8 m) in all. unusually large house; size , central position suggests manor house or other high status house, possibly supporting castle. building underwent extensive alterations in 17th, 18th , 19th centuries.
the swan, 139 high street, contains remains of medieval open hall. parts of roof date 14th century, , street range extended , chimney stack added c. 1500.
castle street began life medieval lane town s high street drawbridge of royal castle. other end of lane parish church of st peters. in 16th century next church, berkhamsted school founded, while in 17th century there 7 public houses amongst street s trade outlets.
to northwest of berkhamsted stand ruins of marlin s chapel, 13th-century chapel standing next medieval fortified farm. walls , moat surrounding modern farm still remain , reputed haunted.


dean incent s house, residence of john incent (1480–1545), dean of st paul s cathedral , founder of berkhamsted school in 1541.



129 high street grade ii* listed house known dean incent s house. (john incent, dean of st paul s, founded berkhamsted school.) 15th century half-timbered house, interior has original exposed timber framing , several tudor wall paintings. building incorporates part of older structure , used public meeting place before court house built. house not open public.
the court house, next church, dates 16th century, , believed lie on site of medieval court portmote or borough court held.
sayer s almshouses, legacy of john sayer, chief cook charles ii, @ 235–241 high street, comprise single-storey row of almshouses built in 1684.
the bourne school, @ 222 high street, legacy thomas bourne (1656–1729) (master of company of framework knitters) build charity school in berkhamsted 20 boys , 10 girls. front rebuilt in 1854 in jacobean-style red brick; not clear if part of building predates 1854. in 1875, pupils transferred national school , funds used scholarships.
the site occupied pennyfarthing hotel dates 16th century, having been monastic building used accommodation religious guests passing through berkhamsted or going monastery @ ashridge.
the town hall, victorian gothic market house , town hall, designed architect edward buckton lamb (built in 1859, extended in 1890, restored in 1983–1999), built public subscription berkhamstedians. comprised market hall (now carluccio s restaurant), large assembly hall , rooms mechanics institute. when berkhamsted became part of new dacorum borough council (based in hemel hempstead), there plans demolish building, these plans werer stopped ten-year citizens campaign during 1970s , 1980s, ended @ high court.


the totem pole @ berkhamsted



the berkhamsted canadian totem pole sits adjacent canal, close castle street bridge. in 1960s, roger alsford, great-grandson of founder of timber company, james alsford (1841–1912), went work @ tahsis lumber mill on vancouver island. during strike, rescued starvation local kwakiutl community. alsford s brother, william john alsford, visited island, , in gratitude local people s hospitality, commissioned totem pole canadian first nations artist henry hunt. western red cedar pole, 30 feet (9 m) high , 3 feet (1 m) in diameter, carved hunt @ thunderbird park, centre first nation monuments. completed pole shipped britain , erected @ alsford s wharf in 1968. alsford s warehouses replaced in 1994 private housing development limit access pole, can viewed @ distance public road. 1 of handful of totem poles in united kingdom, others being on display @ british museum , horniman museum in london, windsor great park, bushy park , yorkshire sculpture park. carvings on totem pole represent 4 figures first nations legend: @ top sits raven, trickster , creator deity; sits on head of sunman, has outstretched arms representing rays of sun , wears copper (a type of ceremonial shield); sunman stands on fearsome witch-spirit dzunukwa; @ base two-headed warrior sea serpent, sisiutl, has up-stretched wings.
ashridge, estate managed national trust of 5,000 acres (2,000 ha) of native broadleaf woodlands, commons , chalk downland on chiltern ridge north of berkhamsted. ashridge has been featured many times in film , television series due distinction area of natural beauty. scenes filmed sleepy hollow @ golden valley , harry potter , goblet of fire @ ashridge s ancient frithsden beeches wood. climbable monument francis egerton, 3rd duke of bridgewater, tall doric column urn (a grade ii* listed building), stands in grove within ashridge.
