phan thanh giản 1 of foremost mandarins of nguyễn court. played key role in negotiating treaty of saigon french in 1862. negotiations led formal cession of vietnamese territory french expeditionary corps had occupied in 1861 (the first parts of future colony of cochinchina): provinces of già dinh, mỹ tho, bien hoa, , poulo condore islands ceded, , war reparations paid french.


because of role in these negotiations, phan thanh giản became rather unpopular, both vietnamese population, , court of king tự Đức.
