natsilane great hunter , carver. hunted respect sea lions killed. older brothers-in-law jealous of talents. 1 day when had paddled far out sea lion rock hunt, natsilane speared sea lion dove water breaking off spear tip. when looked canoe, older brothers-in-law paddling away, against protests of youngest brother-in-law. natsilane in despair went sleep on rock, , awaked chief of sea lions. brought live in village beneath sea. turned out had speared sea lion chief s son, natsilane saved boy removing spearhead side. in thanks, sea lions sent him home in inflated sealskin bladder. once home, visited wife in secret , had bring him carving tools. set carving killer whale, animal had yet exist. first tried spruce, sank when placed in tide pool. next, tried hemlock, sank. tried red cedar, circled, came rest on bottom of pool. finally, tried yellow cedar, best carving yet. jumped tide pool out sea. called first killer whale him , told kill older brothers-in-law when next went in canoe hunt, save youngest brother-in-law. killer whale capsized canoe, drowning older brothers-in-law brought youngest shore on back. when killer whale returned, natsilane instructed whale never again harm humans.

raven trickster came upon 3 young women drying salmon on beach. being hungry, , interested in stealing salmon asked them if afraid of being alone. answered no, asked if afraid of bears, answered no. went through long list of animals, of young women said not afraid of until mentioned owls. women confessed afraid of owls. raven walked away , hid himself in bushes nearby, began mimic owl calls. women terrified, , ran mountainside. when halfway , run no more, turned yellow cedar trees. said why cedars beautiful, growing silky bark woman s hair, graceful limbs, , why young trunks smooth touch. why grow high on slopes of vancouver island.
