biography

rudolph born , reared in new york city, attending city schools until eighth grade. until age of ten, , family went fourth german reformed mission (reformed church in america) pastored john h. oerter. @ time, encourage rudolph learn english, family joined first reformed episcopal church pastored rev. william t. sabine, later became bishop in reformed episcopal church. after finishing school, rudolph went jewelry business 5 years.


education

rudolph graduated new york university in 1892, , received master s degree same institution 4 years later. in 1894 graduated theological seminary of reformed episcopal church. desiring study under famous b.b. warfield, continued postgraduate studies @ princeton seminary 1 more year. in 1906 new york university awarded him honorary doctor of divinity. same year traveled erlangen, germany study under professor theodor zahn, leader in conservative new testament scholarship @ time.


ordination

rudolph ordained deacon in 1895 , presbyter in 1896. on january 12, 1909, consecrated bishop in home church 3 bishops , ten presbyters bishop charles edward cheney preaching sermon. rudolph first served coadjutor of new york , philadelphia synod before succeeding bishop sabine bishopric upon latter’s death in 1913. throughout next few years, served bishop in canada, acting bishop in chicago, , bishop of special missionary jurisdiction of south. became presiding bishop of denomination in 1922, , re-elected position in 1924, 1927 , 1930. credited having saved church disintegration after vestments controversy.


seminary professor

reformed episcopal seminary (2003)


the board of trustees of reformed episcopal seminary elected rudolph teach dogmatic theology in 1903. resigned bishop sabine’s assistant in order take challenge of new work. later, became professor of biblical theology , christian ethics. devoted twenty-seven years of life training men pastoral service, using a.a. hodge’s outlines of theology, presents theological topics in question , answer format, stimulate discussion in classroom. , make sure students knew bible, required read through in entirety in 2 years using james m. gray’s biblical synthesis course.


the seminary granted rudolph sabbatical academic year 1930–31 study abroad, died @ summer home in dorset, vt, on september 16, 1930, before scheduled leave.
