sigrid undset born on 20 may 1882 in small town of kalundborg, denmark, @ childhood home of mother, charlotte undset (1855–1939, née anna maria charlotte gyth). undset eldest of 3 daughters. , family moved norway when two.


she grew in norwegian capital, oslo (or kristiania, known until 1925). when 11 years old, father, norwegian archaeologist ingvald martin undset (1853–1893), died @ age of 40 after long illness.


the family s economic situation meant undset had give hope of university education , after one-year secretarial course obtained work @ age of 16 secretary engineering company in kristiania, post hold 10 years.


she joined norwegian authors union in 1907 , 1933 through 1935 headed literary council, serving union s chairman 1936 until 1940.
