there 2 corn mills , malt mill recorded on site in 1534. corn mill modernised in 1910, wheel being replaced water turbine , grindstones being replaced steel rollers. engine house built in 1919 provide supplementary power when there little water in river, , second turbine added in 1922. mill destroyed fire in 1923, , unattractive steel-framed concrete building replaced it.
from 20th century until mill closed in 1972, mill operated gwillim family, operated north mill in midhurst. correspondence relating tenancy of coultershaw mill gwillim family 1905 1930 held in west sussex record office, copy of final lease drawn in august 1968 between john edward reginald, baron egremont, of petworth house , j. gwillim limited, coultershaw ; period of twenty years @ initial rent of £1,250 per annum.
in 1930, john gwillim , novadel limited registered patent improvements in plansifters , (united kingdom patent gb353145). plansifter stack of sieves of decreasing mesh size separate particles size use in milling operations.
in 1992, phyllis catt, daughter of john gwillim published miller s daughter in recorded experiences living @ mill , north mill, midhurst background of rumble of machinery , rush of water .
following death of john gwillim in 1972, mill ceased operate , building demolished following year, although beam pump , water wheel saved restoration.
