public/private partnerships

the vlf s public/private partnerships have increased organization s ability address illiteracy in virginia. while vlf s mission addressed adult learner, organization recognizes parent child s first teacher , illiteracy must addressed across individual s lifespan pre-k adulthood. partnering other agencies similar missions, vlf has been able work larger number of individuals through partner programs , staff.

the virginia literacy initiative

the initiative, brought public , private sectors together, 1 of first public-private partnerships of kind in nation. founded in 1987 vlf , virginia council adult education , literacy, partnership increased number of virginians participating in literacy instruction 24,309 in 1987 on 55,000 in 1992.

the virginia adult learning resource center

the vlf partnered centers professional development (now virginia adult learning resource center (valrc) @ virginia commonwealth university , virginia office of adult education @ virginia department of education establish literacy training office. training consisted of free professional development , program development workshops , technical assistance training private volunteer groups. in 2000, 4 literacy support coordinators representing 4 regions in virginia, offered regional technical advice , support on eighty non-profit literacy organizations through literacy support center, unique collaborative public/private project helped strengthen literacy programs through training , mentoring. these 4 positions consolidated one, , today literacy specialist, works both vlf , valrc, ensures training , technical services nonprofit organizations coordinated.

regional literacy coordinating committees

the vlf, along office of adult education @ virginia department of education, instrumental in organizing , facilitating cooperation among many private , public adult literacy agencies , social services through fourteen regional literacy coordinating committees, still serve state.

the literacy institute

in 2002, vlf partnered virginia commonwealth university’s school of education , center public policy form literacy institute. institute ensures virginia’s public policy makers kept aware of problem of illiteracy in commonwealth , directly combat problem through research , development projects.
