typhoon ruby, final of 4 typhoons form in basin during october 1988, originated area of disturbed weather formed on october 20; consequently, both joint typhoon warning center (jtwc) , japan meteorological agency (jma) started tracking system @ 18:00 utc day. following increase in deep convection, tropical cyclone formation alert (tcfa) issued jtwc on october 21. @ noon, jtwc first classified disturbance tropical depression while jma upgraded disturbance tropical storm. @ time of classification, cyclone situated 1,760 km (1,095 mi) east-southeast of manila on october 21 , moved southwestwards @ first. on october 22, depression upgraded tropical storm, , given name ruby jtwc. same day, philippine atmospheric, geophysical , astronomical services administration (pagasa) monitored storm , assigned local name usang.

initially, storm continued track towards southwest, before taking on westward course typical of straight runner . during afternoon of october 22, jma upgraded ruby severe tropical storm. both agencies estimated ruby attained typhoon status on october 23. despite developing pinhole eye, intensity estimates jma suggested ruby strengthened on next 24 hours. however, data jtwc suggested ruby rapidly strengthened during period, attaining peak wind speed of 230 km/h (145 mph), , minimum barometric pressure of 950 mbar (hpa; 28.05 inhg). meanwhile, jma estimated maximum intensity of 135 km/h (85 mph) , same pressure. ruby accelerated westward speed of 27 km/h (17 mph) in general direction of luzon. while maintaining small 30 km (20 mi) wide eye, made landfall on central luzon on october 24, while according jma still @ maximum intensity. made ruby intense tropical cyclone strike main island of luzon since typhoon patsy of 1970 season. system entered south china sea morning of october 25.

based on analysis jma, ruby believed have maintained intensity on land, although jtwc noted ruby weakened substantially on land. during evening of october 25, when 350 km (215 mi) west-northwest of manila, ruby started weakening trend. meanwhile, storm s forward motion slowed down significantly, , ruby turned towards west-northwest late on october 26. around time, jma downgraded ruby severe tropical storm. while moving in general direction of hainan island, jtwc estimated ruby lost typhoon intensity on morning of october 27. increased northeasterly wind shear took toll on storm, resulting in continued weakening. during afternoon of october 27, ruby struck island of hainan, jma estimating winds of 95 km/h (60 mph). land interaction rugged terrain of island accelerated weakening trend, , after becoming devoid of deep convection, jtwc ceased tracking ruby late on october 28. eighteen hours later, jma followed suit.
