history
hulhulé airport

the airport first started out small strip of land on inhabited island of hulhulé. hulhulé airport opened on 19 october 1960. first runway built on hulhulé island made of slotted steel sheets. dimensions of runway 75 ft × 3,000 ft (23 m × 914 m). first aircraft landed @ airport royal new zealand air force transport plane on 19 october 1960 @ 13:55hrs. first commercial flight air ceylon flight (4r0acj) landed on runway @ 15:50hrs on 10 april 1962. first aircraft owned maldives landed on runway of hulhulé airport on 9 october 1974.


in may 1964 government , people of malé worked construct new asphalt runway. 4 districts of malé competed prize money of 1,000 rufiyaa, awarded fastest district. on first day 108 volunteers enlisted project , 1,563.08 rufiya donated. new runway opened on 12 april 1966 @ 16:00 president ibrahim nasir.


upgrade malé international airport

when tourism boom in maldives began in 1972, country in need of international standard airport transport international tourists resort islands. so, on 11 november 1981, airport officially inaugurated under new name of malé international airport .


maldives airports company ltd (macl) formed on 1 january 1994 operate , manage male international airport. macl governed board of directors appointed president of maldives.


privatisation of airport

in 2010, nasheed administration appointed ifc run bidding process privatisation of airport. bid won consortium between gmr group , malaysia airports provided rufiyaa 1 billion upfront fee government expansion , modernisation of airport 2014, , operation 25 years.


by end of year, macl officially handed on aerodrome license of airport newly formed gmr malé international airport ltd (gmial). gmial announced development plans included reclaiming more land @ eastern end of runway; new terminal built. terminal consist of 3 separate bridged buildings. plans separate cargo terminal announced. however, project faced numerous delays.


on 26 july 2011, malé international airport officially renamed ibrahim nasir international airport in memory of ibrahim nasir, 2nd president of maldives , founder of airport.


in late 2012, new government of maldives under waheed administration declared concession agreement void ab initio , on 27 november 2012 gave gmial deadline of 7 days evict airport , decision drew mass protests government s opposition, criticism government , media of india. on 7 december, gmr handed on airport government, , macl reinstated operator.


on 1 january 2017, airport rebranded velana international airport, referring family house name of president ibrahim nasir. rebranding part of strategic plan in aligning airport economic vision of yameen administration.
