in 771 bc, coälition of feudal lords , western rong tribes overthrew king , drove zhou out of wei valley. during following spring , autumn , warring states periods, major states pursued independent policies , declared full independence claiming title 王 borne zhou rulers.
all claimed descent yellow emperor through cadet lines of royal houses above, although historicity of such claims doubted.

the kings of qin claimed descent lady xiu, granddaughter of remote descendant of emperor zhuanxu, grandson of yellow emperor. similarly, in next generation, lady hua said descended shaodian, legendary figure father , foster father of yellow , flame emperors. although nüfang (lit. lady fang ) counted elai s son, scholars have claimed figure elai s daughter and, along numerous important women in pedigree, indicates qin matriarchal.
the surname ying (lit. abundance ) said have been bestowed shun upon dafei (the husbandman yi). if ever held of descendants, had fallen out of use time of feizi, granted name anew king xiao of zhou.
