sumo shows important side of traditional japanese sport, religious occasion sporting event. many sumo rituals closely associated shinto belief. believed ancient sumo matches purely religious events predetermined outcomes offering kami, matches regarded divination - e.g. if well-liked fisherman competed , won, catch predicted year.
