the stony point line opened frankston baxter station in 1888, , hastings, bittern , stony point in 1889. branches opened baxter mornington in 1889, , bittern red hill in 1921. 300-metre (330 yd) long branch long island junction long island opened on 29 april 1969 serve adjacent steel mill.


the red hill line closed in 1953. mornington line remained until 1981, line south of moorooduc operated mornington railway tourist railway. passenger services on entire line withdrawn on 10 june 1981, , line long island junction stony point closed 22 june 1981, until 26 september 1984 when passenger services reintroduced. reopening drc railcars drc40 , drc 41 used, 2 mth carriages in between them making 4 car train. drc railcars used, either in multiple or mth trailer cars. frequent breakdowns saw diesel locomotives called in haul consist instead.


in december 1989 celebrate centenary of opening of line, derm 58rm used provide shuttles. on day drc railcar had failed, , third series t class used 2 mth carriages provide regular service.


in november 1987 locomotives used on service included p15, t403, t355, p12 , p18. locomotives changed on daily basis due excessive wear of brake blocks constant stopping , setting movements. despite failures drc railcars remained preferred rolling stock until @ least 1990.


in august 1994 t class 2 mth carriages used, november 1995 weekday services being operated p class 2 mth carriages, class used on weekends mth car. on occasion in november 1995 x class diesel in v/line freight livery used 3 mth carriages, these kinds of workings disappeared after v/line separated passenger , freight divisions.


by 2000s service had settled down, class locomotive , single mth carriage sent between frankston , spencer street on regular basis refuelling , maintenance. 2 mth carriages used on train, third stabled @ frankston, , fourth @ spencer street or newport workshops undergoing repairs. class locomotive , 2 car mth consist carry 126 passengers, weighed 199 tonnes , 56.9 metres long; car total of 238 passengers carried, weighed 238 tonnes , 76.1 metres long. @ point ownership of mth carriages transferred country operator v/line suburban operator m>train, , later connex melbourne. on limited number of occasions v/line underwent locomotive shortages, leased classes freight australia , later pacific national appearing on train in green , yellow livery.


in late 2007 safeworking on line altered, electric staff , train staff , ticket sections replaced automatic , track control signalling controlled remotely frankston signal box.


on 27 april 2008 diesel railcars again introduced on line, time sprinter units purchased v/line in 1993. 2 units operate service, single unit returning southern cross servicing on regular basis, sent in opposite direction replace it. units selected normal v/line fleet, , not dedicated run. no ticketing equipment fitted, new locks fitted toilet doors prevent use when being used metro trains melbourne.


on 1 april 2015, passenger services suspended indefinitely following series of safety breaches boom gates failed drop approaching train. after 3 months of remedial works, full passenger service returned line on 30 june 2015.
