cfb edmonton headquarters of 3rd canadian division, highest army authority in western canada, , number of brigade groups, including 1 canadian mechanized brigade group (1 cmbg), regular force brigade group in region. base situated @ steele barracks (named sir sam steele) outside city. area formerly known cfb griesbach within city no longer operational: buildings , land sold , no longer crown assets. base collective important part of community surrounding edmonton , home of prestigious , experienced units in canadian military.


the 3rd battalion, princess patricia s canadian light infantry, along elements of lord strathcona s horse (royal canadians) , 1 combat engineer regiment (all part of 1 cmbg) chosen part of canada s military response september 11, 2001 attacks , deployed on combat operations afghanistan (including operation anaconda) in 2001 , 2002. units base deployed kandahar, afghanistan, part of canadian forces command takeover in area well. units edmonton deployed on domestic operations such assist red river flood in 1997 (where entire 1 cmbg deployed) and, more recently, part of operation peregrine in response forest fires in british columbia in 2003. units cfb edmonton deployed on numerous peacekeeping operations, including bosnia , kosovo, among others.


the area support unit (asu) , cfb edmonton provide infrastructure , support 47 units located in , around edmonton. number of military personnel @ these units includes 4,500 regular, , 500 reserve force soldiers. there 500 civilian employees , 7,800 family members, bringing total population of edmonton military community approximately 13,300.


in february 2012, reported alberta government had been in contact federal government , military officials in ottawa , edmonton on use of runway medivac flights planned closure of edmonton city centre airport. alberta deputy premier doug horner said had spoken minister of national defence, peter mackay, , minister of public works, rona ambrose further discussion. decided operate medical flights out of purpose built facility @ edmonton international airport.
