the original model 29 superseded model 29-1 in 1960, modifications made ejector-rod screw. model 29-2 replaced following year, 1 screw had secured cylinder-stop spring being deleted. barrel length shortened 6 1/2 6 in 1979. these 2 versions known pinned , recessed . pinned means barrels screwed in, , secured pin driven through frame , notch in barrel. recessed denotes rear of bored cylinder holes being countersunk, that, when loaded, cartridge rims enclosed cylinder. in 1982, cost-cutting model 29-3 dropped recessed cylinders , pinned barrels crush-fit barrels.
the -4 , -5, produced 1988 , 1990 respectively had changes improve durability heavy use. in 1994 29-6 began production, fitted standard rubber monogrips hogue replace previous wooden items, standard tapped holes being provided attaching scope mounts. 29-7 started production in 1998 changes locking mechanism, firing pin s attachment, , hammer , trigger produced metal injection molding process.

some s&w model 29s rebuilt aai corporation make quiet special purpose revolvers (qspr). these had new, short, smoothbore barrels (35 mm / 1.375 inch), .40 / 10mm bore, cylinder chambers reamed accept special qspr ammunition externally resembled metal-cased .410-gauge shotgun shells internally worked piston trap gases. special ammunition made aai.
this pistol developed 1967 1971 used tunnel rats in vietnam war. qspr tested on battlefield in 1969, , improvement , testing program ran 1970 until 1971. @ least officially never entered service. withdrawal vietnam reduced interest in qspr weapon, , program ended in 1972.
