1990s History of Algeria (1962–99)
despite occasional efforts restore political process, violence , terrorism characterized algeria landscape during 1990s. in 1994, liamine zéroual appointed head of state 3-year term. during period, armed islamic group (gia) launched terrorist campaigns against government figures , institutions protest banning of islamist parties. when took massacring civilians not involved in politics, faction based in east-central region broke away in protest, establishing salafist group preaching , combat (gspc), continued fighting time after effective demise of gia. government officials estimate more 100,000 algerians died during period. see also: list of algerian massacres of 1990s
zeroual called presidential elections in 1995, though parties objected holding elections excluded fis. zeroual elected president 75% of vote. in 1997, pro-zeroual rassemblement national democratique (rnd) party formed group of fln members rejected fln s advocacy of negotiation fis. zeroual announced presidential elections held in 1999, 2 years ahead of scheduled time.
algerians went polls in april 1999, following campaign in 7 candidates qualified election. on eve of election, candidates except abdelaziz bouteflika pulled out amid charges of widespread electoral fraud. bouteflika, candidate appeared enjoy backing of military, fln , rnd party regulars, won official vote count of 70% of votes cast. inaugurated on april 27, 1999 5-year term.
