southeast missouri state left miaa following 1990–91 season move on ncaa division i, , replaced emporia state university in 1991–92 season. missouri–st. louis left miaa in 1996, did missouri–rolla in 2005. lincoln forfeited membership in 1999.
fort hays state university joined miaa in 2006 , university of nebraska omaha entered league in 2008.
on july 3, 2007, southwest baptist granted independent status football team, while remaining teams stay in miaa.
on july 8, 2009, miaa ceo council voted remain 12-team league foreseeable future, denying application rockhurst university (which not have football team wanted compete in other sports). vote ended short term speculation league expanding 16 teams divided 2 divisions.
